Artichoke

also known as

Globe Artichoke

Cynara Cardunculus

The artichoke is an edible member of the thistle family. They are often steamed or boiled and served with a sauce to dip the leaves in.  Artichokes have a delicate flavor and can be a lot of work - only the fleshy part of each leaf and the heart of the artichoke is edible.

Like many things, artichokes have a role in Greek Mythology. The maiden Cynara was seduced by Zeus and taken to Mt. Olympus to be near him. She had a good life on Olympus but missed her mother, so she returned to visit her. When she returned to Mt. Olympus, Zeus was displeased with her and turned her into a plant - Cynara Cardunculus.
