Forget-me-nots
also known as
Myosotis Alpestris
Forget-me-nots are a species of small flowering plants, The flowers are typically blue but can also be pink, white, or yellow, with petals that resemble a mouse's ear. They are native to Western Eurasia and New Zealand, but can grow and thrive in North America, South America, and Papua New Guinea.
The first use of Forget-me-nots in symbolism was in Germany in 1926 at a Masonic emblem at a convention. Throughout history, it has evolved to be a symbol of remembrance. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador wear forget-me-nots in early July for remembrance of those who died in WWI. It is the symbol for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide, and in Lithuania, it represents the commemoration of the January Events of 1991. Many countries used it as a symbol for those suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia.
German legend states the the Forget-me-not earned its name from a Knight who was on a walk with his lady near the river. He picked blue flowers for her and fell into the coursing As he was swept away, he tossed the flowers to her and instructed her to "forget me not!" To this day, it remains a symbol of love and devotion.
