Laurel
also known as
Sweet Bay
Grecian Laurel
Laurel is a shrub or tree from the plant family Lauraceae. They are native to the Mediterranean Basin.
The leaves of this plant are aromatic and savory. You may be familiar to Bay Leaves as a common addition to many Italian or Indian dishes. They are added during the cooking phase and removed before serving as they are unpleasant to chew and can be a choking hazard. Ground Bay Leaves are much more palatable and easy to ingest.
Laurel plays a prominent role in Ancient Greece. The god Apollo fashioned Laurel wreaths after the woman he loved, Daphne, scorned his advances and fled to Crete with the help of Gaia. To console himself, he fashioned the wreaths from the Laurel tree Gaia left in Daphne's stead. Laurel wreaths have since become a symbol of status and victory. In fact, "laurel" is the source for the words baccalaureate and poet laureate and the wreaths are worn to this day by graduating students as a symbol of their victories.
